Numbers cast anywhere else on the block are pretty much meaningless. With the exception of a "010" and "020" found under the timing cover and on the back of the block near where the starter mounts. They are basically the same. Chevy made both castings and used them pretty much interchangeably over the years. The 3970010 seems to have been made in much larger numbers than the 3970014.
