Appears to be "2.G.G.R. 4. 36" [ pls see attached image for detail]. 1st time getting a P08 with the markings so any assist on the unit ID most appreciated. 1918 P08 Marking front Grip Strap. I have a 1918 P08 which looks like a WW2 re-arsenal. Has (42) on the toggle and matching last two numbers of the serial number. It has two stamps on the receiver - 1917 and 1920. I think it's had a bit of a history as there are a few other unusual marks such as a barrel stamp in English and what appears to be erased stamps where you'd normally expect Waffenamt. Luger P08 War Time Proof Marks. I was cleaning a Luger 1939 Code 42 and decided to count the serial numbers. I wrote them on a piece of paper as I found them. I have a couple of Luger reference books but book totals were a lot less. I figured I would see how informed members are on board and also write a reference note for future Luger buyers.2/1001 is the concealment code of Ernst Thalmann in Suhl Germany. There were two Thalmann sites in Suhl. 1/1001 and 2/1001 were the concealment codes. These are very high quality and usable magazines and make excellent magazines for shooter Lugers. The machined and welded body is the best of all the magazines produced for the Luger.

The Imperial era is 1900-1918 (Germany is ruled by a Kaiser) The Weimar Period is 1919-1933 (Between the World Wars) The NAZI period is 1934-1945 (Hitler) The Spread winged eagle was used from 1939-1945.This is a common pistol, but I could not locate a comparable example from recently sold Gunbroker listings. Most of what I saw there were refinished or well-worn with mismatched magazines and sold in the $900 to $1,200 range.
